RENEE BOTT &

SAM CARR-PRINDLE

October 11 – November 13, 2019

Roll Up Project is pleased to present paintings by Renée Bott and Sam Carr-Prindle. Bott and Carr-Prindle met at Paulson Bott Press, and their shared interest in printmaking techniques is reflected in the four paintings on view in the Roll Up Project windows.

Carr-Prindle’s painting That’s All, 2014 and Bott’s painting Letters Home: Farewell, 2019 are hung in the window on Harrison Street. The crashing waves in Letters Home: Goodbye are painted in rich blues that fade to pale grays, placing the viewer in the middle of the watery expanse. Bott’s deft linework brings to mind Japanese woodblock prints and etchings, while her handwork – spatters of red paint, softly tipped waves – adds depth and movement. Similarly, Carr-Prindle utilizes detailed lines to create an abstract field that feels dimensional. The undulating lines in That’s All could represent a puff of smoke, or wavy hair, or something invisible, like sound waves.

In the windows on Third Street, the artists selected works with similar sentiments: at left, Carr-Prindle’s Farewell, 2018 and at right, Bott’s Letters Home: Goodbye, 2019. Bott’s endless ocean waves are rendered in soft gray-blue and tan, bringing to mind faded photographs and long voyages. Carr-Prindle’s Farewell depicts a fog bank, but the subtle shadows also recall landscapes and images from electron microscopes.
